CHICAGO PART TWO

tx400_chicago2_400.jpg

The intonation festival was dusty but not particularly lusty. Chicago apparently has that quirky midwestern humor, "Century Lumber 'We're Lumber One!'" There were a lot of bands for people who like modern indie rock (eeeaauuuhhhh!@#, excuse me I just vomited up a death cab for cutie CD...thats funny they usually come out the other end) and Les Savy Fav for those with sophisticated taste...like passing both the grey poupon and the tasters choice while lounging on a Craftmatic II. The difference was palpable: half asleep kids standing around smoking during other bands vs. a large half naked man with a trunk full of costume changes who walked onto stage, screamed "Hey Ladies, who likes a man with some money!!!" and blew the sky off the place. At one point he got everyone in the whole festival to crouch down and people obeyed like trained bears. Plus a napoleon dynamite ringer jumped on stage and sang for a while.

If you're wondering why there is not a photo of me standing on teh shit fountain with my pants pulled down, I was in mid squat attempting to do so but a artsy lady who perhaps made it came out and yelled at me.

My polaroid camera likes to flash everyone too much so I put tape over it's busy little electric eye and did other nerdy photography things. Then I tested it out on Laura. Much better.

WHAT TO DO

_RW_0643_400.jpg

I went to PS 1 this weekend and it was actually loads of fun. I haven't been in years. My friend who's a painter and seems to know what he's talking about said the show there was total poop but I haven't seen it yet to determine my humble personal take on its turdliness. I haven't written anything for a while so watch out. For far briefer and far funnier writing than mine, check out this girl's refreshingly well written and funny website.

I decided to go to gym this morning and left my house with my little ipod on and a big cute dog was outside the coffee shop smiling at me. The shop was filled with pleasant hip folks working freelance on their ibooks. I felt like I was in a trendy commercial for carbonated beverages.

I have to decide this week if I really want to go on this crazy trip to eastern europe. It's not all expenses paid although I fly and get housed for free (and expensive visas are no longer required from the US). On the other hand my cousin invited me out to SF for parties, concerts, a huge beach party reunion with cool extended family, my sister who finishes work this week in preparation for grad school and general fun. I love visiting SF and my family, it's sort of a guaranteed great time with no stress which I could probably use right now.

On the other hand Kiev and a week in Berlin seeing old friends sounds great too. Even though it's partly work. One of the photographers we're working with is paranoid about being recognized over there and I guess being taken advantage of as a well to do so and so, robbed, etc. and has instructed me to refer to him exclusively as Cederic if I come. Never mind the notion of assuming a name and the ridiculousness of that but Cederic. He asked me if I wanted a name too, so I'm thinking of Skylar. It's starting to dawn on me that photography is a very gay profession in the stereotypical sense. Or at least the strait guys seem 10 times more gay than the gay guys.

JULY 4TH PART TWO

Portra400NC_Ari4J3_400.jpg

I took a series of tongue in cheek "patriotic ari" photos. That mural is on my rooftop so we did it spur of the moment. There are some better ari poses but they didn't really come out.

SHOUT

polaroid690_swaymulti1_400.jpg

Good lord I felt like shit last week. Last spring I was so happy even peeing was fun. Now six packs go through me with no particular satisfaction. Sunday I went to shout and it was great. I ran into Kelly my best friend in medical school. I forgot how much I miss her smile. Audrey was there too; I miss her french accent.

BROOKLYN AND FIRES

_MG_0560_400.jpg

Ryan came over friday before we went out to union pool. I took a cute Oprah magazine photo of her and she emailed it to her mom and sister trying to pass it off as a cute picture of her cat. But they were like, you're just sending this because you think you look good ryan. So she was like, "damn," and, anyway, wanted more cute pictures taken. Then we hung out on the roof to smoke and I highly impressed her with my dorky special effects tricks.

On the way back to meet up with a friend in manhattan I ran into this crazy fire on first avenue right near my house. No one seemed to be seriously hurt so I took pictures. I only had two color polaroids left and one ended up being beautiful with siren lights streaming across a big red fire truck with a #5 right out of William Carlos Williams and that famous Demuth painting. But I put them up on top of a phone booth to dry and someone must have seen me do it and stole them. I'm still whimpering about that. I only had B&W3000 film left which I had never tried before and kept overexposing. But I got the hang of it by the last picture.

KIEV CHICKENS

49130026_400.jpg

Alex.jpg

Two of my friends are now best buddies and hang out together and send me pictures. I love that I get to play friend matchmaker. The other picture is my cousin who alternates between being a jazz, reggae and hardcore/punk musician since he seems to play all instruments and can sing.

I reserved my ticket to the ukraine and europe yesterday so I'm now committed to this thing. I've been so depressed this spring I'd better get my act together before I go. Some guy reading this is going to hunt me down and kill me on general principle because the idea of running around kiev with a bunch of models doesn't excite me at the moment. I'm mostly going for the experience but I'll hopefully come around to being a fun goofball over there. Photography requires a lot of energy. I usually end up being pretty hyper when I travel though.
