LAST WEEK

Alex came to visit the week before last. He started a new band; it’s sort of middle eastern/dub/dance played by punk rock kids. Sounds fucking great actually. Reminded me of The Juan Maclean. I wish I had hung out in spain and paris with them this summer. Musicians don’t always have the life but they do get around. Shrewdly, he picks his dayjobs for maximum side benefits: like working part time for an airline so he can hop on a plane for free, anywhere in the world. Similarly, he was eating at a hip bakery cafe in SF one day and fell in love with the quality of the french food and the quality of the beautiful women that worked there. So he immediately got a job there too. Smart guy. I work in a laboratory. My building feels like a kind of like a cross between a star trek convention and that hospital Robin Williams worked at in Awakenings. I find myself getting into situations like the HBO show extras. I’ll see someone I went to medical school with in a hall and turn around to try to pretend I have something else to do but they go “hey andy!!!” and we have a long enough conversation to establish that they have nothing to say at which point I have to suddenly remember that I forgot a gel in the oven upstairs, I’d really better run before it like burns but nice to see you. Thank god for Ari who usually keeps things interesting but is off in brazil this week.

Alex and I are always trying to show each other a good time so when he arrived Sunday evening we went over to have dinner at my friend’s parent’s new apartment. Her dad is a well deserved big deal in art (like got annoyed at the Met and decided to have his retrospective at Moma instead big) so he has a spectacular place overlooking the Hudson with pretty framed things to look at and a cute cat. It was especially spectacular for me since he’s as much a photographer as he is a painter. He had some amazing stuff like self portraits of (I don’t want to get art googled so I’ll abbreviate) C. Sherman impersonating him and his wife. I remember beautiful photos of twins made to look very identical in pose and complexion with a merge of the two in the center. Such that you didn't know that they weren't all the same person without an explaination.

I'm officially single these days and totally out of practice as usual. I got all excited about this girl on the left at a halloween party. But after coming over to talk to me, she blew me off. And then the cops busted the whole thing.

i admit i have the weird sunday blues were i almost feel panicky about beginning my week in a way that reminds me of being in junior high which probably makes no sense and you may be wondering why i'm waxing on when all i really mean to say is your photos are amazing and i can't get enough of them. and you not wanting to be googled makes me admire you even more.

You really do take a nice photo for a lab geek kinda guy (but with excellent taste in music). let you in on a (guilty) secret... I have downloaded your occasional bits of music and then - gasp! - claimed them as my own in order to make freinds and influence people. how uncool is that? then again, you've made some people you don't know and who live in another city far, far away sing along to some stuff...perhaps the best kind of anonymous altruism...or altruistic anonymity? hmmm... anyway thanks, and yeah, you do take nice pictures.
