The Serbtanic

Serbians are my kind of people. They take me out on yachts and their version of the nytimes has naked women in it. We had a bunch of Croatians on board so I politely suggested we throw one overboard for good luck but apparently it's strictly forbidden during the Dormition of the Theotokos unless they've stolen one of your sheep. Anyway, I took photos in between eating yummy spicy food and drinking a six pack of beer. Borko ate 20 of the hors d'œuvres and tried to hide the toothpicks so no one would know. I'll just post everything.

ALEX PASTERNAK AT HARVARD AND DJING THE MONDAY PARTY AT HOME SWEET HOME

It turns out that it wasn't just the declaration of independence that John Hancock left his mark on; check out the grave yard he's buried in.

Alex's dj set went till 5:30am with a ton of people including swedes and a hot model who introduced herself by pinching my butt. I think that and my recent run-ins with a famous actress at the gym have pretty much satisfied my self-esteem requirements for the entire year.

HEIGHTS AND HOT PHOTOS

My friend Ellen came over a bunch of times this month to talk about art and photography. I've always thought she was taller than me so I finally got out a tape and measured with the help of her friend. But she was right, we're the same. I think my hips come up to her knees so she seems a lot taller.

I have very few photos of Ellen because she claims to always look bad and avoids cameras. I think this may have something to do with the fact that she only allows photographs when drunk off her ass or woosy at very high altitudes. We haven't hung out in a while so I dug up old photos to investigate. She's hot in them but I think it's pretty clear that the huge hunk of man-meat seen here downing a cool beer in a hot spring is a hard act to follow and makes everyone look bad around him.

MY DAD IN FLORIDA

My Dad lives in Florida during the winter. I went to visit and he took me to a beach boys concert. It was a whole auditorium filled with grandmas with that Buckminster Fuller sphere of hair like where they take a couple dozen wispy strands and convert it into an age-defying force field. Anyway, I thought his beach outfit warranted a photo.

RYAN AND BRITTA AND RANDOM STUFF

I took pictures of ryan for the first time in 6 months. We only had like 20 minutes before she had to run off to meet up with her boyfriend so they're pretty rough. I'm gonna go back and do them again better. Styling and makeup by Ryan. The first one is her directed photo and then I took over and took film photos. I like her freckles.

NEW TOY

I was so fat when this was taken. Everyone's always like "you're not fat!" I don't know...I look pretty fat.

I got my beauty dish in the mail today. It's like a huge aluminum hubcap with a dingdong in the middle that the flash bouces off and then curls around in all directions and hits you in the face! Sort of an up close and personal light that you can use for a lot of things especially faces (i.e. makes girls and their makeup look pretty). It was cheap but took forever to get. I got it because I took these photos which were sort of a preliminary test of using T55. Polaroid's gonna stop making it at some point so I wanted to use it before it's gone. It's so contrasty that you need a lot of softness but then if I stuck a softbox right in their face there wasn't enough shadow and sparkle. I really wasn't happy with these and I decided to stop wasting film and try something different. Hopefully this light will improve things and I can use it for all kinds of things. For technophiles the first was shot was with a 180mm RZ67ProII with a 4x5 back, the second was an insanely close Symmar APO 300mm/5.6L.

BLUEJAYS

My roommate and I got flowers for the window boxes I made today. I noticed that a bluejay family made a nest right outside my window. The mom was all cuddled up in there when I got up. In general the birds seem to be having a field day and yentaing it up to each other all morning so it must finally be spring.

DAMN

I had been yapping about Kurt Vonnegut to my little sister Britta this week and gave her a book. Then I was checking the news tonight on the web and caught the story just as it first started to appear. It made me feel creepy. It turns out that he and I went to the same college and both studied biochemistry despite having, on some level, no interest in it. This makes us members of a granfalloon, a bokononist term for a meaningless association of human beings that people take great pride in. Other examples of granfalloons are the Communist party, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the General Electric Company, the International Order of Odd Fellows--and any nation, anytime, anywhere.

Galapagos was one of his best books and I'm surprised people don't mention it more. Writing in the eighties, when every member of the republican party was dismissing the seventies energy crisis and global warming, he describes one character as having had the silly and completely ridiculous idea that power could be generated for free using strange contraptions that harnessed energy from the sun and the wind. Also:

It is hard to believe nowadays that people could ever have been as brilliantly duplicitous as James Wait--until I remind myself that just about every adult human being back then had a brain weighing about three kilograms! There was no end to the evil schemes that a thought machine that oversized couldn't imagine and execute.

So I raise this question, although there is nobody around to answer it: Can it be doubted that three-kilogram brains were once nearly fatal defects in the evolution of the human race?

A second query: What source was there back then, save for our overelaborate nervous circuitry, for the evils we were seeing or hearing about simply everywhere?

My answer: There was no other source. This was a very innocent planet, except for those great big brains.

and so it goes.

BOOKMAKING

I'm going through tons of photos to make a preliminary website and book. It's like a pyramid. Preliminary work to get access to better models and makeup/hair people for more serious shoots to make a better book to get access to even better models etc... I think I'm gonna have to get help. I've looked at so many photos the critical part of my brain is in temporary paralysis. I shot some decent stuff right before vacation so I'll show a few here that are interesting or maybe not interesting but I like them at the moment.

cum sheets

I'm working on an article for Tokion on Warhol and some of the interviews are so good it hurts. Benjamin Liu who was a late-factory assistant and Terrence Koh have this great conversation that goes way off topic into the casual, almost meaningless, spontaneity of how art is actually made and they rebuke that anyone is influeced by anyone. At some point they're talking about Victor Hugo. Not Mr. Misérables, but an artist in the eighties who was Halston's boyfriend:

"I just realized that the piss paintings happened the same time when Victor Hugo was doing cum sheets."

"He did cum sheets because I'm doing cum sheets."

"Yeah, I have a Victor Hugo cum sheet."

"Really, oh my god.

Turns out Koh's cum sheets are far more complicated and Hugo would just cum on a sheet when he was doing dudes and then give it people as a present. I love that. Cum sheets, no way, I'm doing cum sheets too. Small world...
